Baby Needs & Infant Essentials Check List

Baby Diapers: What To Use Cloth or Disposable?

Many babies cannot wear disposable diapers: the plastic causes rashes; perfumes or chemicals purporting to contribute to skin care and the general airless quality of disposable diapers increases diaper rash and allergies. Disposable diapers can cause sores, staph infections and fungal infections in babies: disposables trap heat, increasing bacterial growth. Some disposables contain a super-absorbent gel called sodium polyacrylate, which is deadly to pets and causes allergic reactions in people; dioxin has found its way into diapers, as its used to bleach the paper components. Parents who want healthier babies have preferred to ditch plastic high-tech disposables in favor of safer products.

Better Absorbency in Todays Cloth Diapers

Modern cloth diapers have increased in absorbency, and manufacturers have done away with the need for pins: diapers are fitted with Velcro, elastic or straps. Diapers are made of absorbent fabrics, so diaper covers are often a must-have. They cant be called inexpensive, but when you compare the cost to the number of disposable diapers needed every day, they seem more affordable. Cloth diapers are more work: they must be emptied, placed in hampers or diaper pails and laundered. Washing cloth diapers takes time, and some daycares refuse to use them. You may start to feel like your whole life consists of changing dirty diapers and cleaning babies bottom! But, if you are a new parent and still have some energy left for environmental conservation, the single most important thing you can do is switch to cloth diapers or biodegradable disposables.

Best Baby Bottle Choices: Chemical Free Glass vs. Plastic Bottles

Plastic baby bottles have been considered the best choice because they couldnt break, but with recent discoveries of the dangers of a chemical in plastic called bisphenol A (BPA). A small amount of BPA has been shown to damage hormonal systems in males and females, contributing to reproductive diseases and cancer.

Choosing a tempered glass baby bottle or sippy cup (tempered glass is much harder to break) and a clear silicon nipple (buy one made without nitrosamines) are the safest options for a chemical-free bottle. Latex nipples are also an option, and some babies are safe with them, but others develop latex allergies. The nipple size determines flow size, which should be matched to the age of your child: an infant takes a smaller nipple and lower flow size than a toddler. Schedule regular nipple changes as your child grows. Nipples come in different shapes, too. A newborn with problems breastfeeding may prefer a different kind of teat on the bottle: you may need to experiment to find the right design for your child.

Baby Crib Buying Guide:

For new parent buying a baby crib for your infant, you want to combine safety with a long-lasting, durable piece of beautiful furniture you'll be glad to someday hand down to your child. Baby cribs come in all sorts of styles, from the traditional canopy crib to baby beds made with springs like regular beds only with the addition of rails. To convertible cribs.

Bassinets and Moses Baskets

A Moses basket is a woven basket with handles while the bassinet is typically a plastic woven basket on a stand. These are not an essential buy, but they certainly can make life easier in the first few months. You can use a crib from day one but both a Moses basket and bassinet are portable between rooms and both items fit easily into your own bedroom if this is where you want your baby to sleep during the early days. These are best for babies up to 3-4 months or until the baby is mobile.

Cribs

Cribs are suitable for babies from birth.
A NOTE ABOUT TWINS: If you have twins, many pediatricians recommend putting them in the same crib for the first four months.

Drop-Side Crib

Many styles have mechanisms that allow you to lower or raise the side with one hand, while cradling your baby with the other. Cribs with one drop-side or a ‘static’ drop-side tend to be sturdier than cribs with two drop-sides.

Crib with Adjustable-Height Mattress Base

Most cribs have several height levels for the mattress – the highest setting is for when the baby is newborn and gradually as the baby grows you lower the mattress height to prevent the baby from climbing or falling out.

Crib with Castors

Two or four castors make your crib easier to move around. At least two must be lockable, and should always be locked when not in use.

Teething Rails for Cribs

Clear non-toxic plastic fits over the top rail of the crib and protects your baby's gums once he's teething and has started to chew.

Convertible or Stages Cribs

Larger, with removable sides, so they can be converted into some combination of toddler bed, daybed or headboard and footboard for a full-sized bed. A good value choice, since crib beds have a longer life-span.

Travel Cribs

Folding cribs are perfect for traveling - some also double as a playpen. It's a good idea to get your baby used to sleeping in the crib for a few nights at home, before you travel. Many styles have removable, washable covers and fold away into a travel bag.

What is the Sound of a Heart Breaking?

It is the sound of someone curled up in a tiny ball crying softly in the night, the sound of the first unwanted teardrop touching your skin, it's the sound of a telephone that doesn't ring, the sound of regret pounding inside your brain with every heartbeat, it's the whispers of the toy animals he gave you.

It's the shuffling of feet walking away from you, the sound of your soul shattering into a million pieces at recognizing the word "goodbye," it’s the soundtrack of memories torturing you, it's the sound of feeble hands trying to push back the obstinate hands of time, it's the sound of a cherub's dying breath, the sound of all those years disappearing in the vortex of Cupid's kitchen sink, it's the unrelenting plaintive baby meows of an abandoned kitten outside an ignoring door.

It's the sound of the rain that doesn't ever stop, the sound of all the doors shutting and closing in your face at the same time, of raging, howling storms in the night when there's no one there to hold you, the sound of your voice as it screams back at you, the echo of "I love yous" burning holes in you, the sound your heart makes as it tells you to lie still because nothing you will ever do will matter without love.

The sound of the waves of the polluted beach you went to as it moves from the shore and crashes inside your mind, of the sniffles that make up your pathetic "SOS-to-the-world," the cracking of the brittle black-red petals from the sidewalk vendor roses he gave, the sound of the music he used to make going to your gut.

The sound of things in your room being thrown around and landing on the floor, the caress of kitchen knives on skin, the sound your throat makes as you swallow your saltiest tear.

It's the sound of your own voice calling out to someone who isn't there, of dying birds getting splattered on a city pavement, of terms of endearment used a hundred times a day struggling to crawl into a vacuum of forgetfulness, it's the sound of your own sobs keeping you company, it's the cold, uncaring stillness of the air you share your space with.

Destruction isn't always as noisy as bombs exploding. Sometimes the ultimate catastrophes are as quiet as a feather falling on the floor of a Zen monastery. No one else can really hear your heart breaking except you.

pick-up lines for feminists

making the move
at the bar

the club
the pro-choice rally
or the conference
on women's rights
in the 21st century
is no easy task
for feminists
young and old.

how do you
subtly ask for digits
while still making it
perfectly clear
that you are fine
being alone
and are certainly
not buying into the idea
that women are worthless
without a significant other?

just remember to smile.
or not.
(depending on if you
feel like it)
and try some
of these lines
on for size:

if i could rearrange
the alphabet
i would put u and i
together
and then we could
work on trying
to think outside
of this male dominated
language.

your paradigm or mine?

you're so sweet
you put hersheys
out of business.
so sweet
you can bring down
all those
bastard big businesses.

somebody better call
god/allah/buddah/
assorted goddesses/etc.
because he/she/gender neutral being
are missing an
angel/messiah/messenger.
if atheist this line may not work

did it hurt?
when you fell
from the top
of the hierarchy
when society
identified you
as a woman?

pinch me.
with consent of course.
you are so
third wave
i must be dreaming.

where have you been
all my life?
hopefully fighting
against oppressive
patriarchal systems.

your feet must be tired.
because you have been
running through my
mind and struggling
against the repressive
gender roles
that we have been
socialized into
all day.

if the personal is political
then our getting together
has the potential
to subvert the patriarchy.

what's your sign?
radical? liberal?
socialist? cultural?
eco?

if these lines fail
don't worry.
it's probably just
because our
fascist media
has embedded
said pick-up line
receiver
with the idea
that you are a
crazy
scary
man-hating
castrating
bitch.

just keep telling yourself.
if they haven't
started questioning
what society
tells them yet.

then maybe
they are not
the one
for you.

A Full Heart

When one is too hurt one cannot see others' pain, is too blind with one's own.
When one has many weights to lift, one cannot enjoy life.
When one has many expectations, one cannot be patient with others.
When one has fear, one cannot enjoy life.
When one does not give, one is making the heart lonely.
When one does not take, one is making the heart feel inferior
When one does not hope, one is shutting oneself into a tight closet.
But when one does not love, one is killing one's self.

|written by 12-year old Olivia, Berkeley, California|

"I, with a deeper instinct,

choose a man who compels my strength,
who makes enormous demands on me,
who does not doubt my courage or my toughness,
who does not believe me naive or innocent,
who has the courage to treat me like a woman."
|Anais Nin|

Empty

Standing in silence, holding my breath
Disconnected and dry
And though I'm certain that there's nothing left
To hold on to, to give or to try
Some things never change, no don't ever change
And I'm feeling the cold
Thinking that we're getting older and wiser
When we're just getting old

And when you feel you're near the end
And what once burned so bright is growing dim
And when you see what's been achieved
Is there a feeling that you've been deceived?

Say a prayer for me
Help to feel the strength I did
My identity has it been taken

is my heart breaking on me?...
All my plans fell through my hands They fell...
through my hands on me...
all my dreams...

It suddenly seems,
it suddenly seems

Empty

Comes the Dawn

After awhile you learn the subtle difference
Between holding a hand and chaining a soul.
And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning
And company doesn't mean security.

And you begin to understand that kisses aren't contracts
And presents aren't promises,
And you begin to accept your defeats
With your head held high and your eyes wide open.
With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child.

You learn to build your roads
On today because tomorrow's ground
Is too uncertain for plans, and futures have
A way of falling down in midflight.
After awhile you learn that even sunshine
Burns if you get too much.

So you plant your own garden and decorate
Your own soul, instead of waiting
For someone to bring you flowers.
And you learn that you really can endure,
That you really are strong.
And you really do have worth.

And you learn and learn...and you learn
With every goodbye you learn.

Love isn't when...

Love isn't when you can't sleep... it's when you want to keep your eyes open...

Love isn't when you keep holding on... it's when you learn to let go...

Love isn't when you kill yourself with jealousy... it's when you understand...

Love isn't when you fall for someone... it's when you catch that person when he/she falls...

Love isn't when you see her/him everywhere... it's when you close your eyes and she is still there...

Love isn't when you tell her/him what you feel... it's when you give everything for her/his sake...

And Love isn't when you think you were blind... it's when you know she/he was wrong but you didn't mind!
